We’re pretty excited about the new Eames documentary, EAMES: The Architect and the Painter. It hasn’t made it our way yet, but we’ll be there when it does. The Eames redefined the possibilities of what designers can do, and they had a lot of fun while doing it. You can learn more here

2010 IBM Print Ad Campaign - Noma Bar

The wonderfully clever, minimalist ad posters for IBM done by Noma Bar. It is refreshing to see minimalism done well, with wit and depth. Noma does a great job of playing off negative space and making the viewer work for the answer, and be rewarded with something interesting and beautiful. Here are some of our favorites:

Pioneers of Information Graphics

I love these information graphics from a couple of the pioneers of information design during the mid 1800’s. The first two were made by the Florence Nightingale, the English nurse and statistician. The second two were designed by French civil engineer Charles Joseph Minard. Besides the typography, I would have thought that these pieces were contemporary.

Asian Manhole Cover Designs

bradwoodarddesign:

After seeing these beautiful, Asian manhole covers, I decided to add designing one to my bucket list.  If anyone knows how to get this kind of a design job, let me know.

Willem Sandberg

Willem Sandberg - Experimenta Typografica 11

During World War II, Willem Sandberg created Experimenta Typographica, a series of type experiments that explore form and negative space. He created these beautiful pieces while in hiding and working for the Dutch Resistance—which you have to admit, makes them even cooler. The series was later published during the 50’s. I love the contrast in both color and the juxtaposition of clean sans-serif type against rough, torn edges.

While searching for inspiration on a project I was doing about India, I discovered the beautiful, geometric floor art of Kolam design. Traditionally an Indian art created to protect homes, it is based off a dot grid that is crafted with rice flour or stone powder. Watch the short video to get the full background!

The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings

In 2001 while going to graduate school in Wales, photographer Kaylynn Deveney met 85-year-old Albert hasting and made it her job to record the small rituals and routines of his quiet life. In the book she published of the project, The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings, each photo is accompanied by a caption written by Albert, giving two separate perspectives of the scene. This book motivates you to pay more attention to the people around you, and appreciate the day-to-day more. A lesson that I believe photographers are the best at teaching.

Pergamon World Atlas 1968

Beautiful maps and infographics can be found it the 1968 Pergamon World Atlas, created by the Polish Army Topographical Services. Here are a few of our favorite pages:

We’ve been waiting to see the promised process video for Dan Kuhlken’s most recent poster, Explosions in the Sky. It is always neat to see all of the complexities that went into a wonderful design. Check out more work by DKNG!
